Board Certified Optometric Physician

Dr. James A. Russell grew up in Atlanta, and today he is a Board Certified Optometric Physician. First, he studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Georgia, where he graduated cum laude in 2003. Then he moved on to Nova Southeastern University. There he earned both a Bachelor of Vision Science and a Doctor of Optometry.
His clinical training took place in three settings. One was Tianjin Eye Hospital in China. Another was Omni Eye Center in Atlanta, and the third was the NSU Health Care Clinic in North Miami Beach. Because each setting works differently, his training covered more than one way of caring for eyes.
Dr. Russell cares for patients at Eye Doctor Villages FL in Pinellas Plaza. Comprehensive eye exams are the core of his work. Your visit can include visual acuity, keratometry, retinoscopy, eye pressure, refraction and a slit lamp exam. Dilation is used when it is needed. Dr. Russell also fits contact lenses. First, he measures your eye. Then he checks how a lens sits, and a follow-up shows how you are doing.
He also sees patients for medical eye concerns. Examples include pink eye, red, painful or itchy eyes, sudden floaters and a sudden decrease in vision. If you have a problem like this, call (352) 399-5412 first. Then the team will tell you what to do next.
As an optometrist, Dr. Russell does not perform surgery. When a patient needs surgery, such as cataract surgery, he refers them to a trusted eye surgeon. He then co-manages their care with that surgeon, so you do not have to sort out the next step alone.
Many of his patients are seniors, snowbirds and new residents of The Villages, so he explains findings in plain words. First, he tells you what he sees. Then he explains what it means for your eyes and what the choices are. After that, he leaves time for your questions, because a good visit should end with you understanding your own results.
Your prescription is always yours to use wherever you choose. After your exam, you receive a copy. You may fill it in our optical, with our opticians and on-site lab, or take it anywhere you like.
